A Haworth, un village pluvieux d'Angleterre, le Révérend Patrick Brontë élève ses 3 filles poètes et romancières ANN, EMILY et CHARLOTTE, et son fils peintre et dessinateur BRANWELL. Le talent de ce dernier n'étant pas reconnu, il sombre dans l'alcool tandis qu'EMILY et CHARLOTTE se disputent l'amour du jeune vicaire NICHOLLS. Elles partent toutes 2 à Bruxelles pour parfaire leurs connaissances linguistiques...
