Londres 1870, FANNY HOPWOOD fête ses 9 ans aux côtés de son père tenancier d'une maison de passe sans qu'elle le sache, de sa mère et de sa copine LUCY. Pour éviter qu'elle n'apprenne le métier de son père, elle est envoyée en pension. 10 ans plus tard, elle revoit sa famille mais le père est tué par accident lors d'une dispute avec un client, Lord MANDERSTOKE. Sa mère meurt à son tour et confie FANNY à son vrai père, le ministre CLIVE SEYMORE. Mais MANDERSTOKE refait surface...
