En 1903 à Saint-Louis, les SMITH, une famille bourgeoise du sud des Etats-Unis, vit heureuse : la fille aînée a trouvé un fiancé, le seul fils est sur le point de partir pour suivre des études à Princeton et ESTHER tombe amoureuse du jeune voisin, JOHN TRUETT. Cependant, cette joie communicative s'estompe le jour où ALONZO SMITH, le chef de famille, annonce qu'il va monter d'échelon dans sa carrière juridique et devoir s'installer à New York.
